Two of Martha Argerich's favourite musical partners join her for concerts in March. For two concerts in Italy, Claudio Abbado will conduct the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and Yuri Temirkanov will join her in London for a concert with his St. Petersburg Philharmonic.
Worth mentioning is the fact that Argerich will play the Mozart Piano Concerto No. 25, a work that she has not touched in over 30 years. Be quick if you want to see the concerts in Ferrara and Reggio Emilia.
At the end of March she also gives a two-piano recital with Lilya Zilberstein in Freiburg. And last but not least, three concerts in Athens are also planned. Argerich will perform with long-time friends including Stephen Kovacevich, Yuri Bashmet and Mischa Maisky.

Wondering why you think the London performance is likely to be the Ravel Concerto in G? I had a feeling it would be the Shostakovich (trumpet, piano, strings).. Which ever it is, keeping my fingers crossed that we are 3rd time lucky; she has cancelled the last two scheduled London performances..
ReplyDeleteThey have a brief audio clip from the Ravel Concerto on the Barbican website. That might be an indication. Also, with the Shostakovich, in that case it would seem likely they would have mentioned the trumpet soloist already. Just my take on it.
DeleteLike many, I am keeping my fingers crossed for 24th March. Although the Barbican has the concerto down as tbc, the St Petersburg Phil website has Prokofiev 3 on its website. If that is the case, I will in 7th heaven!!
DeleteShe will play Prokofiev's 3rd Piano Concerto. That's the information I found on the webiste of St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra.
ReplyDeleteAnything in the States?
ReplyDeleteHi PYR, thanks for your blog and information about Martha's music. I need to contact her or her manager for information about how her recordings can be use for an art performance. I will greatly appreciate if you can tell me how to contact them. Kind regards, marian.
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid I have no contact details for her management.
DeleteAny insight into whether she has any plans to return to the States?
ReplyDeleteNot that anyone can see for the moment. As soon as I hear something, I will post it here.
DeleteAthens is very lucky!!
ReplyDeleteI'm from Brasil. I'm planning a trip to Europe in 2013, and dreaming about the possibility of see Martha Argerich's concert. Do you have information about the 2013 presentations? I'm willing to include a place just to hear her playing. Thanks. angelica
ReplyDeleteNot for the moment. I will publish information as I get them.
DeleteJust found out about this London cancellation. I'm starting to think I'll never be able to hear her play live as this is the third time I've booked and each time paying more than I normally can afford to as a student. Has any explanation been given? It almost feels like we London fans are being picked on as other dates go ahead at the same time. Vengerov is a fantastic replacement but still...
ReplyDeleteI am so disappointed Martha has withdrawn her London concert. I was so looking forward to it :(
ReplyDeleteHave just recieved the news from the Barbican about Martha's cancellation of the March concert. How many thimes can her devotees buy tickets a year in advance only to be let down at the last minute? I am gutted and fear I may never hear her play in a live performance.
ReplyDelete@Anonymous, Diana and Robbie Cathcart:
ReplyDeleteI am also a disappointed fan, as I was planning to book a trip to London to see this concert. But as disappointing as it is, it's part of the Argerich package. One has to always be ready for a cancellation, precisely because she does not sign contracts before performing, and concert promoters put her name in a programme even when she confirms with a 'maybe'.
FYI, if you want to be sure of hearing her live, go to Lugano. She performs several times each summer at her Progetto, and rarely cancels there. Hope this helps a bit.
Darn - 3rd cancellation in a row for London! Though if there was one replacement I could have chosen, it would be Vengerov.. so I'm not too devastated.
ReplyDeleteAthens news: Martha will not play in J. S. Bach's Concerto for two pianos in c minor, BWV 1060, in Athens on 12 March.
ReplyDeleteAlex
When will She come to the United States...specifically Salt Lake City, Utah? *sigh
ReplyDeleteAccording to the BOZAR website, Martha is going to play on April 16th together with Vengerov, Maisky and other musicians to celebrate Ivry Gitlis' 90th birthday.

Golden rule: if she gives a concert= buy a ticket
ReplyDeletebut your not sure till the last minute even when you are
in the concert hall, everybody is still nervous..but when she begins wow you will never forget , it,s amazing.
hope she,s oke health and all.
She's ok, health and all. Just very tired to travel, play, travel, play, travel, play..
DeleteShe would like some time to practice the piano for herself, not for concerts. Play less concerts, read more books, watch movies or tv series..you know :-) Time for herself!
Hey pyr,
ReplyDeleteDo you have any information yet about the 2012 Lugano Project? I am wanting to travel from Australia to attend and need to book flights as they are getting more and more expensive and I can't seem to find any news anywhere on the internet. The official site is still all about last year.
Thanks!
The programme has not been announced as of yet. However, I have seen two dates in June in which Argerich is listed as performing; 15 and 27 June, both concerto performances.
Deletelugano is just about done, there are 37 pianists participating, 67 musicians all in all. A record! And a challenge for Mr. Piccardi, director of the Progetto. There are a few slots to be filled but most of the program is confirmed (except for last minutes changes, and that happen every time!)
DeleteDo you know when she will be in the USA?
DeleteI HOPE SHE COMES TO THE US!!!! ESPECIALLY MNNESOTA!
DeleteThe three concerts in Athens were fabulous!!!!!
ReplyDeleteAnything in Holland? i really would like to go...
ReplyDeleteDo you know if she will be playing in London at some point in 2012?
